The Modesto Irrigation District is currently recruiting to fill one part-time regular position in the Domestic Water Department of the Water Operations Division to perform a variety of clerical duties including those requiring specialized knowledge.
Distinguishing Characteristics
The Clerk III is the advanced journey level in the Clerk class series. Positions at this level are distinguished from other classes within the series by the level of responsibility assumed, complexity of duties assigned, independence of action taken, by the amount of time spent performing the duties, and by the nature of the public contact made. Employees perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties assigned to classes within this series and may provide technical and functional indirect supervision over assigned personnel. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned areas of responsibility.
Supervision Received and Exercised
Receives direction from a higher level supervisor or manager. Exercises technical and functional supervision.

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Develop schedules and methods to accomplish assignments ensuring work is completed in a timely and efficient manner.
- Serve as first line of contact to external customers via telephone or in person; refer customers to appropriate staff and/or provide a variety of general information regarding District functions and services; and explain division and District operating policies and procedures.
- Type and proofread a variety of documents including general correspondence, agendas, reports, and memos; prepare a variety of materials from marginal notes, rough draft or verbal instructions.
- Develop, maintain, and archive a variety of files and records.
- Compile and tabulate financial or statistical data.
- Schedule meetings and make meeting arrangements.
- Perform the most difficult work related to clerical support of an assigned division, department, or program.
- Participate in evaluating the activities of staff, recommending improvements and modifications.
- Provide and coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies.
- Operate standard office equipment including personal computers which utilize various software.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other District employees, outside agencies, and the public using principles of good customer service.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
- Principles and practices of technical and functional supervision and training.
- Modern office procedures and equipment.
- Policies and procedures of the assigned division, department or program.
- Basic accounting principles; financial record keeping and reporting.
- Principles of business communication, including the proper use of grammar, spelling and punctuation.

Ability to:
- Organize, assign and review the work of staff engaged in a variety of clerical duties.
- Independently perform administrative duties in support of assigned division, department, or program.
- On a continuous basis, know and understand all aspects of the job; intermittently analyze work papers, reports and special projects; identify and interpret technical and numerical information; observe and problem solve operational and technical policy and procedures.
- Research, respond to and assist in the resolution of inquiries and complaints.
- Prepare correspondence, memorandums, and routine financial and operational reports.
- Use independent judgment and personal initiative.
- Know, understand, interpret and explain division, department and program policies and procedures.
- Develop and maintain filing systems.
- Perform arithmetic calculations.
- Interpret rules, regulations and follow instructions.
- Compose general correspondence and letters.
- Perform the most complex and difficult clerical support duties.
- Participate in evaluating the activities of staff, recommending improvements and modifications.
- Provide and coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies.
- Operate and use modern office equipment including a computer and applicable software.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Experience and Training
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: Three years of progressively responsible experience similar to Clerk II with the District.
Training: High school diploma or equivalent.
License and Certificate: Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license.
