South San Joaquin Irrigation District has a history over 100 years strong.  We are a special district providing irrigation and drinking water to local farmers, businesses and residents.  Currently we are accepting applications for a Ditchtender/Maintenance Worker.  This position works approximately seven months (mid-March to mid-October) in the distribution of irrigation water to farmers within assigned division. The remainder of the year in the performance of varied duties in the construction, repair, cleaning, and maintenance of irrigation canals, ditches, pipelines, pump lines, and structures.

Qualified candidates will have knowledge of:  

• General farming, soils and crops 
• Record keeping and reporting
• General computer use, data entry
• General construction experience with concrete and forms
• Mix cement, sand and water to produce concrete, grout or slurry by hand or mixing machine
• Safe work practices
• Basic methods, tools, techniques and materials used in the operation, construction, maintenance, repair and cleaning of irrigation facilities.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to:

• Work without direct supervision.
• Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
• Make water measurements.
• Perform heavy manual labor.
• Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Enter, maintain and interpret records utilizing a lap top computer
• Operate equipment utilized in the construction, maintenance and repair of irrigation canals, ditches and pipelines
• Erect and disassemble scaffolding, shoring, braces, traffic barricades, ramps and other temporary structures including safety rails and fall protection when necessary
• Possession of or desire to obtain a Class “A” driver license

Must be able to work nights and weekends
